Custom Touch Screen Design Guidelines

AMT will consider full custom touch screens for projects with annual qty >3kpcs, as a guide NRE charges are around USD4000.

Matrix or Analogue resistive?
Matrix touch screens are recommended for simple menu applications. A series of blocked cells are determined by a grid layout. For example, 3 rows and 4 columns, a simple keyboard encoder can be used to process the information.

Analogue touch screen are recommended for more complex applications which require a higher resolution.

Active Area
The active area of the screen and the outside dimensions are usually determined by the active area of the LCD used. The viewing area should be the same or slightly larger than the LCD frame opening. We recommend a minimum 1.5 mm border between the viewing area and the active area.
Outside dimension may be selected by the customer according to their application.

Circuit Area
This refers to the silver bus border on each side of the touch screen. Our standard minimum for the circuit area is 4 mm on each of the non- tail sides. If a custom configuration requiring less than a 4 mm border is required, please Contact us to discuss your options.

Tail Selection; Integral, FPC or HSC?
AMT offer Integral, FPC (Flexible Printed Circuit) and HSC (Heat Sealed Circuit). Selection depends on termination required, bend radius and serviceability needs.

An integral connection to the touch panels produces the most sturdy construction and may be terminated via an AMP compatible connector.

FPC allows a bend radius to 2mm minimum, termination is possible via a ZIF or pinned type connector.

HSC (Heat Sealed)
HSC must be terminated by a key seal bonding method. Bend radius of 1mm minimum is possible. The type can be terminated with a connector at the factory.

Backing Glass Thickness
Custom touch panels are available either with ITO backing glass (0.7mm, 1.1mm, 1.57mm, 1.8mm, 2.3mm or 3.0mm) or acrylic construction. We recommend touch screens larger than 8.4" use 1.57mm or thicker.

Surface Finish; Antiglare or clear?
AMT offer varying grades of anti-glare finish depending on the lighting environment, in addition the etch will provide some resistance to scratching.
Where ambient glare is likely to be a problem, we recommend a clear or very fine etch to provide the best image quality.
